The space race was an important time in history, for the U.S, USSR, and the rest of the world. Soon after World War II, the Soviet Union and United States began a global battle, communism against democracy. Space became a huge entity in the war. Each side spend billions on besting each others achievements in what later became known as the famous Space Race. The Cold War was the United States capitalists, versus the Soviet communists. It wasnt an actual war, but more of a grudge, because there wasnt any real fighting going on. It began in the late 1950s, after World War II. The war ended after the Berlin Wall was torn down, and the USSR fell in 1991. Although they hated each other, both powers had a mutual enemy, NAZI Germany.†¦show more content†¦In 1961, John F. Kennedy made a public claim to land a man on the moon before the end of the decade. Sputnik was credited for instigating President Kennedys declaration. None of them were willing to lose to the Soviets (The Space Race Lifts Off). In 1959, the Soviets launched Luna II, which hits the moon. It took thirty three and a half hours to land. The mission confirmed that the Moon had no mag netic field, and did not find any evidence of radiation belts their either (Bell). Nasa was established on July 29, 1958. It was created to counter the Soviets Sputnik (NASA created). The goal was To reach new heights and reveal the unknown so that what we do will benefit all humankind (Daines). NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Agency. With the competition rising, and all the growing support, the amount of employees quickly grew from 34,000 to 375,000. The budget also increased almost five hundred percent (Dunbar) going from eighty nine million to 5.9 billion (Space Race: Cold War Front). The first manned mission was Apollo 8, and the first to land on the moon was Apollo 11. Apollo 11 landed July 1969, and six more followed till roughly 1972 (Williams). The story is perfect for all who didnot experience nor could imagine how it was to be an African American in Americacirca the 1860s. Beloved lends a gateway to understanding the trials andtribulations of the modern African American. The Novel has many things thatoccur that are very striking, most of which have to deal with the treatment ofthe African Americans. The book as a whole is very disturbing, and even shows towhat lengths African Americans were willing to go to avoid enslavement ofthemselves or their children. In the novel the most extreme case of someone avoiding enslavement comes fromthe main character when she attempts to kill her children. The main character ,Sethe, is not willing to let her children end up re-enslaved and would rathersee them dead and in Heaven then in an earthly hell of being slaves. I believethat from Sethe was justified in her actions. Slavery is a very harsh andhorrible way to live, and living in chains and without freedom is not living asa human should. Slavery degraded African Americans from humans, to that ofanimals. They were not treated with any respect, or proper care. Even modern daycriminals, those that have murdered large numbers of people are treated morehumanly then the average slave ever was. The life that the children would oflived would of been one of complete servitude, they would of never of known whatit was like to live on their own and make their own decisions. This all goesback to the fact that they would never be human or treated as humans, so basedon this I believe that Sethe was justified in killing her children andpreventing them from becoming enslaved. The fact that the slaves where treated like animals, and where traded and soldlike cattle is well depicted in the book. This did not actually shock me, theitems in the book that shocked me had to do with the living conditions, andpunishments that the men where put through. What I am referring to in particularare the living conditions at the work camp in Georgia. The fact that the menwere in little cubbie holes in a trench in the ground is very disturbing. Thefact that when it rained They squatted in muddy water, slept above it, peed init(110) was very shocking and unpleasant to me. The other thing that was reallydisturbing at the same camp was the breakfast. This was disgusting and at thesame time seemed very weird. The white men considered the African Americans tobe animals, yet they still made them perform oral sex on them. This was quitepossibly the most bothersome and abhorrent item that occurred to the slaves inthe book. The treatment of the slaves has a lot to do with current African Americans andthe many items they face. In the book, there is no such thing as a family, theslaves can not be married nor are they allowed to be mothers or fathers totheir children. This carries over to modern America in that some AfricanAmericans still have problems with family structure and slavery can be heldaccountable for this. Another reason this book is helpful is that it explainswhy African Americans attempt to remove themselves from making close bonds withfamily, as Professor Jordan said they have to make fun of moms and learn thatthey can not protect the people they love from others. This goes back to theroots of slavery to the fact that families where split up and the slaves had notcontrol, and thus could not protect the ones that they loved. He helped and supported me during the time I was struggle and suffer at work and the new life here. Through him I had come to God and believed in God. God had leaded me the way to go further and fulfill my dreams. We married after 3 years dating. One Year later we moved to Germany because of my husband work and we stayed there for 1 year and 4 months. From this time, I was really enjoy my life. I has chances to experience plenty of new things with my flesh eyes which I had read in books and surfed on Internet. I knew more about amazing country over the world and I was so interested to learn so many things about social, history, custom, religious about Germany and European. I had built a very good relationship here. I will never forget about this wonderful period of my life. And I, now finally, am here in New York. Enjoy my second winter. My dream about American for a long time had come true. To me, New York was a far-away and strange land at the first time. I was scared and lonely for almost 3 months. I and my husband moved to New York last winter in October 2011 and we experienced 2 terrible storms then we settled up everything to get ready for a lot of plans. I could not forget the first time my husband teach me to drive. My heart was bumping and my palm was sweat. I tried to get my driver license other way I had to stay at home. And now I can I drive to library every week, found a good job, made good friends and had plenty of good relationships, and the best thing is I will be Baptism next month to become a Catholic Christian. Thanks God blessed for me onmy life. I had so many goals and I had made them come true. I was on phone with my Mum on my 27th birthday. She said she is so proud of about me that I made her happy and the most important she asked me â€Å"What are you going to do next?† Five years living aboard is such a long time, but it goes so fast. I did not let any hardship hold me back and I am going to go through another bigger goal which is go to college and I will never stop to achieve my dreams. I was interested in Health filed and I always wished to become a helpful nurse when I was very young. Being a Vietnamese girl learn English to become a nurse is my first and forehead goal I want to do in this coming year. I would love to care about people and make them happy. My motivation is 4 year college and then go to study beyond later if I have a chance because education never stop. There are a lot of things to do in this country. I still want to have a good future with a solid stepped stone in life and a loving family. I will raise my children to become a successful person. They will use my experience story as a role for them to work hard and to be successful in their lives. And I have to say my heart was burning when I found Empire State Community college. I really want to get my degree here so desperately. Empire State community college offer the course which I interested in with flexible study option and it have great faculty, also a warm and diverse community and interesting traditional according to students. I can decide how, where and when I sturdy to complete my education.That’s great. I have a long way to go but I will do my best to reach my goals. Yes! Everyone have a story-history that has made them the way they are to make a happy life! And that is who am I!
